Most people work out to improve their body composition and lose weight, but functional strength can do much more than that. Functional Training can make it easier to do everyday tasks like carrying a heavy bag of groceries up a flight of stairs, doing outside chores, or something as simple as picking something off the floor. We also work on improving balance and stability to complete the overall strength and flexibility needed every day. Functional training builds strength, balance, and stability by imitating the movements you do every day, so these movements become easier.
The focus is on compound movements that work for more than one muscle group at a time. When you strengthen your biceps using an exercise like biceps curls, you're only focusing on a single muscle. This may build strength or endurance, depending upon the weight you use and the number of reps, but it's an isolated exercise. Isolated exercises do not increase your muscles' ability to work together as a unit to do tasks such as bending over to lift a child out of a car seat, getting off the floor after playing with your kids or grandkids, or shoveling a pile of snow off your sidewalk. On the other hand, if you do bicep curls while doing squats or lunges simultaneously, you're building "functional strength," which applies to everyday life.
Functional training is growing in popularity for a good reason. It adds a new dimension to strength training – but do not underestimate the challenging moves. Even though you're using bodyweight, bands, or lighter weights, these moves are challenging if you've never done them before. The good news is you'll develop greater functional strength over time, which will make it easier to do the tasks you do every day. Plus, you'll get a more toned and defined body. Who wouldn't want that?
